What is an MES system?

A Manufacturing Execution System, or, in Cervantes's language, a Manufacturing Execution System, is a tool for real-time production control.

An MES acts as a bridge between enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) and plant-floor control systems, such as automatic control systems (SCADA) or PLCs. Its main function is to manage and monitor work in real time on the production floor, as well as optimize productivity and OEE.

Key features of an MES

  • Scheduling and releasing orders: Defines when and how products will be produced, based on demand, inventory, and capacity.
  • Tracking and analysis: Monitors production progress and collects data to analyze the performance of both your machines and your team.
  • Quality management: Ensures that products meet the required standards.
  • Document management: Keeps product specifications, bills of materials, and work instructions up to date.
  • Resource management: Monitors and assigns resources such as machines, materials, and personnel.

When is an MES needed?

A common problem is the gap between the ERP and reality on the plant floor. ERP systems often offer some kind of feature designed to generate manufacturing orders, but they rarely have enough depth to accurately capture what happens in our plant.

As a result, production ends up becoming a black box, understood only by the people who work in it. This increases the gap between the sales team and management and the day-to-day reality on the plant floor, which often causes frustration.

The MES's purpose is precisely to close this gap, provide real-time visibility into what is happening, make it possible to represent the entire complexity of the production process in a computer system, trace it, and thereby analyze the problems that frustrate us day after day.

Conclusion and challenges

An MES is more than a technology tool; it is a key enabler of efficiency, quality, and transparency in production. Given its importance and complexity, it is essential to choose a system that helps us make the transition to digital without losing our team along the way.

That's why, at Bold, we designed a solution focused on delivering a user experience worthy of 2023, a solution that operators and supervisors alike will love, thus making that transition to the digital age easier.
